3.2.6  Make the Set Design of your Life

The last stage of this workshop involved creating your own set design from a carton box. What I didn't expect to find out was that none of the students have ever used scissors. Because their parents thought it was too dangerous for them.

Also in this stage we noticed that some of the designs where really telling a story (p. 01) from Luis.

There are two set designs standing on a wooden board connected to an iron stand. I will only describe one of the set designs as the other set design is taken from long distance and is easier visible on the next page. All the set designs are made from carton boxes and the lights are made from plasticine and satay sticks. This set design in particular is one that represents nature. The lights above it are yellow and orange in colour. The floor of the set design represents a lake, and the back wall has trees, bushes and flowers visible. To the left on the back wall there is a meadow full of yellow flowers. On the right hand side of the picture there is a shadow of two people. The play has no actors in it, it is a empty set.

The next set design also is placed on a wooden board connected to a iron stand. It has lights which are made out of purple woolen string. They are hanging from the ceiling. The curtains of the theatre are made of purple thin paper, and are kept open with a piece of sticky tape. The wings of the theatre are clearly visible. The back wall is covered with blue paper and in front is a face of a greek statue, the statue is white, has open eyes and a broken nose. As of yet I have not found out who the statue is of. In the rightside of the theatre there is a big green cup, it is made of fimo clay and has an ear. The floor is covered with red thin paper. I do not know what connection the student had with the greek statue. The theatre looks professionally made. The set design is standing against a white wall and underneath we can see a shadow of a person.

The set design is the same as on page 49 just taken at a different angle and from close up, where you can see on the red floor 3 paintings by Frank Stella, a famous painter who used stripes as his trademark. The stripes are in the form of a rainbow. The student has put them up as a mosaic, he put one arainbow against the other. One rainbow has the legs on the floor and one has them in the air. The paintings are on the left and the right side of the theatre, equally balanced. I am not sure why this student has put these paintings there. I am not sure what relationship the student had with this painter. You can also see the ear of the cup is broken and laying next to the cup.

This next set design on a wooden board and iron stand, made of a carton box has only two lights of fimo clay on sticks. The rest of the lights are made of a light and dark blue wool, and are hanging central in the theatre. The back of the theatre, is made of red paper, with a stripe of grey paper, with words on it most probably from a newspaper article. The bottom of the theatre is made of light green paper. This time the piece has an actor in it, there is a statue of a female made of fimo clay. She is a flamenco dancer and has a red cape on. Her arms are put in a graceful posture in front of her chest, and the clay, is grey in colour. Next to her, a red flamenco shoe with white dots is visible. There is a little flower garden at the front of the theatre ending just before the statue. There is also a piece of light and dark blue string hanging down from the ceiling to the floor in a roll. Next to the set design there is a photo hanging on the wall of a porcelain baby already described on page 41.

In this photo we see two very small set designs, both sitting on the same wooden board and an iron stand. The set design on the left has a green floor and a red back wall. On the back wall we see a picture of a cupboard and a shelving unit, cut out from a magazine. On top we see a stick going from one side to the other, on them are green lights made out of fimo clay.
The set design to the right, has written words on the yellow floor, and also a picture of a sun with a smiley face. There is three stick people with the same happy glow. On the left side of the set design there are two modern dancers visible, they are dressed in black. At the back there is a cut out of a green bathroom from a magazine and possibly, a hall with a tiled floor next to it.

The set design again stands on a wooden board and iron stand. It has black lights made out of paper above. The back wall is covered in red paper. A grey arm chair is visible that is stuck at the back, to the red paper, and the wings and floor are covered in light blue paper. On the right hand side an abstract statue made of grey fimo clay is visible, I see arms close to the body, the statue is standing and has no head. On the floor there is a red and black string pattern made of wool, or maybe fimo clay.

This set design also stands on a wooden board and iron stand. It has a blue wall at the back, it has a mosaic of red and white pattern stuck to it, framed with an empty frame next to it, gold in colour. There is a mountain hut standing in a green meadow also on the back wall and by the side of this on the left, is a picture of a chair that is only just visible as an abstract person is in front of it, white in colour. It seems to be a female, she is wearing a long skirt and has her arms folded in front of her chest. There is also a ball of fimo clay with a stick going through it attached to the ceiling hanging down. On the floor we find different pictures that are hard to depict, in front of them is an object made out of fimo clay, red and white in colour that could possibly be a fruit bowl or a chair.

The set design on this page is standing on a wooden board and iron stand. It is a set design of a wooden garden house. There are many orange and yellow lights above made of fimo clay. In the front is a mother with a baby in her arms. The garden house is stuck on the back wall of the set design and fills it up completely. There is a table in front of the garden house, it looks very cosy. The set design is professionally made, the other pictures are not stuck against the wall, they are stuck to seperate bits of carton so they can stand on their own. The pictures consist of a bucay of flowers made of pink, white and yellow, and pieces of cake, lots and lots of cake. The newspaper critics called it a fairytale land in which you could have everything you wanted, It is a very colourful design and one of the favourites of the public.

This is a photo taken of all the set designs and the pictures described together. It is an overview of the exhibition, held in the Kabahn, september 2011. The space has a wooden floor and circular windows and because of this there is alot of light and alot of shadows visible. The picture has a golden summer glow which gives a magical feeling. For me it was an event that I will never forget.
